Mix IDE and Serial HD on 8300?

Question

I've got a Dimension 8300 with an IDE hard drive. I know the 8300 has connectors on the motherboard for serial hard drives. Can a serial HD be added with the existing IDE drive, i.e., will the two types play nice together?

If you use both types, the SATA drive MUST be the boot drive.
