There is a noticable difference between 5400 and 7200 rpm on a laptop. But your needs should determine the speed you select. For gaming and heavy hard drive access (i.e. CAD Drawing) you'd want nothing less than 7200rpm.
grab the 100gig hdd. i have it and it pretty quick. 7200rpm is fast. i wouldnt go to the lower speed unit. if your worried about the extra hdd space on the 5400rpm dont bother. u can always save files to a cdr drive. but i wouldnt get the 5400 model.
What kind of computer do you have that these hard drives are compatable with? I have an Inspiron 600m and am considering those Seagate hard drives for my computer.
I have an Inspiron 8600. Still havent bought either HD, waiting for the price to drop a bit more. I think your 600m will accept any of these as long as it's not the Serial ATA version.
I have two older model 60GB Hitachi 7200rpm drives in my 8600 right now, one in the media bay, if that gives you any ideas.
Oh, I forgot about this, I found a comparison of the two 100GB 7200rpm drives here: http://www.barefeats.com/hard61.html
I think they mention heat somewhere in the analysis.
