Lindsaygr,

To cover as much as possible, jump over to Sonic`s site and see if there is a recent update for your version of Sonic. Then click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 15, article 1; Section 20, article 3, run these. Then for additional information on Sonic, same CD/RW link, Section 13-0, article 1.

Best Regards

I have tried uninstalling sonic DLA, which was advice given previously and that seems to have helped with music cds, they are now burning but there is still a problem with dvds. They copy, then halfway through the burn, an error message comes up saying to save as in ISO file first (which I did and then after 8 percent the programme stopped responding).

Lindsaygr,

Sometimes after applying a firmware update, or even lately a Windows update some have dropped out of DMA mode and are running in PIO mode. Same CD/RW link, look at Section 15, articles 13 & 17.

Lindsagr,

Now run the article I listed on re-loading the IDE channel, CD/RW link, Section 20, article 3. Also consider Section 11, article 2.

Best Regards

I downloaded the file to change to DMA, but I couldn't find any secondary IDEs listed, just a primary IDE and an intel Ultra ATA atorage controller and an intel SATA AHC1 controller. I ran the file anyway and it said one thing was successfully unzipped.  When I now insert DVDs into the DVD8631 drive, it's not recognizing they are there at all and whenever I open the drawer it's snapping shut straight away!

i did what you suggested and uninstalled primary IDE and they were redected when i restarted. Still no detection of discs and drawer still closing shut by itself.

Lindsaygr,

Dell`s little DMA utility would not cause issues with the drive`s internal parts such as the tray, it simply addresses DMA settings, so the problem is the drive itself, something unfortunately we have seen a lot of with the Philips.
If you are still under warranty, I would suggest you contact Dell, explain the steps you have tried. You can also reference this thread to the Dell-Tech, chances are good Dell will replace the drive.
If you are out of warranty and still want to give this one more shot....
Go Device Manager, you never mentioned how many optical drives you have one or two, if two uninstall both, shutdown. Open the case and disconnect the IDE cable from both drives, re-boot the system, let Windows load completely, now shutdown once more; attach the "End" connection of the IDE cable to the Philips and re-flash the drive with the latest Dell firmware, GD30. sometimes this will work, if so we are lucky, if not, then time to replace the drive, sorry.

Best Regards
