It would help if you told us what make and model optical drive you are using.

Duh-h-h!  Sorry about that, I know better!

Device Manager shows TEAC CD-W224E
              Driver date:     7/1/2001
                         version: 5.1.2535.0
                         provider Microsoft

The burner itself shows Dell p/n 19771030-D7
                                               s/n 15625048

Yes. The burner worked fine with a previous supply of TDK disks, and also with the current supply of Memorex.

The Verbatim people said that writing their 52X discs with a 24X burner requires more power, and therefore an upgrade to the firmware.

The programmer in me says "I should be able to get this to work", but the practical me says "Chuck the Verbatim discs, use the Memorex discs, and get back to enjoying life". Which do you vote for, the programmer or the practical?

dell doesn't seem to have an updated firmware for that drive on their site!
have you tried using a different make of cdr as reflectivity varies amongst the different brands?
