Hope someone tells me what to do. I have not decided if it is a hard drive problem or I should just try and see if it will reload everything/?? Help, I will not monitor this board constantly but I will keep a tab on my messages. Thanks, in advance. The error message # was 0x000000ed(0x81b65a68,0xc000009a,0x00000000,0x00000000) I have a Dimension 2400.
(1) at the dell logo keep tapping the F12 key there would be an option for ide drive diagnostic / harddrive diagnostic highlight that and press enter { this is a diagnostic on your hard drive to see for any possible issues this test will take 3min once this test is complete it will tell you if the test passed or failed, there would be some option were it has that diagnostic not support it OK. if it shows any error code like code 7, 8....... then there is a problem with your hard drive} if it pass good for you
(2) restart the computer at the dell logo press F12 there is an option for IDE cdrom drive select that then put the windows Xp cd in the top drive then press the enter button again it will show you the dell logo after which you will get a short message which says PRESS ANY KEY as soon as you get that message press the arrow pointing downwards for 3sec after some time it will give you an option were it will ask if you want to repair press "R" so go ahead press "R" it may ask you which operation system you want to repair press 1 on the keyboard press enter. it may give you a C:\> type chkdsk /r press enter this would take 45min to scan your computer for possible error and will fix it. once this scan is completed the again you will get the C:\> so type in exit press enter you should be able to boot your system to the desktop
Thanks, for the reply. This is my problem. I don't seem to be able to access the R function. Mine will come up with a list and I can chose the Repair function by typing R and hitting enter. It then says it is looking at windows. Maybe I need to allow more time or I will try your suggestion of holding down on the arrow key to see if that might work. I will try this tonight but it will be real late. I will let you know how it comes out if it fixes it or not. Thanks again.
"Okay, I boot to cd rom and enter diag. 32 bit passes, and ide passed. I go to repair the boot up by CHKDSK /R and it all stops. Comes up with looking at setup and never moves from there. Any suggestions /??"
Check out this post about using XP's Recovery Console.
A few things to beware of. You may have to run chkdsk /r more than once. (Twice in my case) Also, it takes AGES - several hours. Sometomes the progress appears to stop. My percentage progress didn't move at one point for over 45 minutes. But then it suddenly carried on. So be VERY patient.

Thanks everyone, I will try this tonight. I got home from class too late to try last night. I will keep you posted. Seems like between work and school at my age (46) it gets kinda busy. I really appreciate all the help and sorry it is taking so long for me to try all of your suggestions.
