Maybe I am missing something. Is the TSST TSL462C supposed to be able to burn DVDs? My CD/DVD palyer palys CDs and DVDs just fine. An it will burn CDs. But even with Roxio Easy Creator 8, it will not burn DVDs.

Thanks to whoever might answer.

the drive is a CD Re-writer and a DVD reader... it does not burn DVD's. I now have a new drive, and it is not the TSST corp drive, and I no longer have any problems with dvd playback. Just ask Dell for a new drive... the problem is the hardware.

good news, i just called dell and they stopping the use of the ts-l532b dvd drive.

they are sending me a sony replacement drive. i would suggest that if you are still having problems with your drive call dell and state your case if your are under warranty..

does anyone know if the sony is an improvement?

I'm having the same problems as everyone else with the TSL462c. I went through all the troubleshooting procedures on the website and started a chat with Dell service, but my limited warranty is expired. What should I do? Am I going to have to pay for a new drive?

I have a 600m and I upgraded the firmware for my TSST TS-L462C 24x slim combo drive from v.DE01 to v.DE07 and now my cpu usage stays from 10-20% all the time. This causes my computer to skip all the time. Anyone else have this problem? Any fix for this?

I purchased a dell inspiron 9300 about 8 months ago (Jan) and hadn't attempted to burn anything up until about 2 weeks ago which was probably my own fault for thinking that everything didn't need to be tested.  The first try actually worked; burning a picture cd on a tsst L532B.  Since that first disc, I haven't been able to burn anything else; cd's, dvd's or otherwise on about 5 different types of media.

I've been in contact with dell support through e-mail, but they haven't suggested anything that isn't common sense after a bit of research.

Today I thought I'd spend some time to try and fix the problem myself and stumbled onto this forum.

As an ex-employee of Samsung's customer support, I'm tempted to say that I should have expected as much out of one of their joint ventures, though I suppose it could have caught fire like some of their other products...  Needless to say I'll be speaking with dell support in a bit about getting a replacement for this lovely wanna-be paperweight.

Thanks much for the info everyone.

I have exactly the same problem.

I have an Inspiron 6000 and since I have flashed the TSST TS-L462C drive to the DE07 firmware, the computer freeze a short time every second. I can't listen music (from the hard drive) anymore with any player (window media player, winamp,...) : there is a noise (click) every second.

It is very annoying.

I have found a partial workaround : if you insert a CD in the drive (even a blank CD-R), the problem disapears (even if you remove the disk, but the bug comes back when you reboot, unless there is a CD in the drive at this time).

I have tried to downgrade to an older firmware, but the flash utility (sfdnwin) refuses to do so.

I hope this bug will be fixed in the next firmware !

*********************I WILL CONTINUE TO REPOST THIS UNTIL DELL STOPS DELETING MY POSTS

About a week ago I posted a complete solution to this problem. Dell has subsequently deleted my post and NO ADMINISTRATOR HAS CONTACTED ME, NOR HAD THE GUTS TO ACTUALLY ADMIT THEY DELETED MY POST.

IF YOU CAN'T ADMIT YOUR HARDWARE HAS AN ISSUE, HOW DO THINK THAT MAKE US FEEL AS A CUSTOMER?

**********************THE DE07 FIRMWARE IS JUNK.

If you know how to flash your drive, then this will be a review for you.

Download these two files:

DO NOT DO ANYTHING YET, JUST DOWNLOAD THEM.

DE05.bin

SFDNWIN Flash Utility

After you download them, run the R114334.exe to get the "DE05.bin" file. This is the DE05 firmware. Yes I know its older than the most recent, DE07. But it actually works.

Run the SFDNWIN.exe file. In the "Drive" field you should see your drive TSSTcorpCDRW/DVD TSL462CDE01 (it might say TSL462CDE(xx) depending on your current firmware version.)

Click the Folder icon in the top left corner. You need to indicate the location of the DE05.bin folder, so go to where ever you unziped that file to.

After you select the DE05.bin file, you should see the Model name with your drive name TSSTcorpCDRW/DVD TSL462C, "Old Version" will show your CURRENT firmware, "New Version" will of course show the NEW firmware you are about to flash to.
***IF YOU HAVE ALREADY FLASHED TO A VERSION *HIGHER* THAN DE05, you can still flash back, it won't hurt anything.

Once you have selected the DE05.bin file, and see all the fields populate correctly, hit the "Processor icon" (little green box?) button directly to the Folder icon. This will begin "downloading" your firmware. Its actually flashing your drive. IF YOU ARE FLASHING *FROM* AN NEWER VERSION, YOU WILL GET A WARNING INDICATING SO, JUST HIT OK.

A box will pop up asking to restart, hit yes/ok.

I suggest going to your device manager (in the Control Panel in Windows) under CD/DVD Rom drives and Uninstalling your CD-ROM drive, then restarting again ***AFTER** you have flashed the drive. This will fresh install your CD-ROM drivers and update your registry. This is not necessary, just a precaution.

Once this is done, you should be good to go.

Firmware v.DE07 causes significantly increased CPU usage AT ALL TIMES. I have also identified some kind of an IRQ and/or bus conflict that seems to affect the USB 1 & 2.0 as well as the sound. Most likely some kind of memory allocation issue with the PCI bus and/or and IRQ sharing conflict. I do not recommend using DE07 per my own testing, and have NOT found similar issues or the previous read/write issues as found with DE01.

*****PER A PREVIOUS POST STATING THAT FLASHING YOUR DRIVE WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY****

I was the person who started this thread. I suggest reviewing some of the comments made by the "more experienced" Dell forum posters. Take it for what you will.

My original drive never worked right. I have since returned it and received a new one (with the same firmware DE01, which Samsung quit supporting). BUT NOT BEFORE I FLASHED IT. This negates any claim that Dell will not exchange a flashed drive. Flashing is something that they actually provide you the ability to do. I originally got the SFDNWIN flash utility FROM DELL'S DOWNLOAD SITE.

I also wanted everyone who has this drive, or any Dell computer for that matter, to know this: THIS IS A REFURBISHED DRIVE, WHICH I HAVE CONFIRMED THRU SAMSUNG WAS RECALLED. THEY WERE PURCHASED IN BULK BY DELL AND SOLD TO YOU IN A ******NEW*** COMPUTER.

There is no stipulation or outline in the Dell warranty for a REFURBISHED drive in a NEW PC. If you buy a REFURBISHED Dell this situation is different, and your warranty is too. The point is, Dell is legally liable to replace this drive if you have issues with it due to the fact that there was no indication to the customer of the product purchased being refurbished. Period. I challenge anyone with a valid understanding of Warranty and written contract law to prove me wrong.

Hopefully those of you who NEED this information (and who obviously haven't gotten it via Dell's support methods) get to read it before they delete it AGAIN.

PS to the Mods - I have saved a text file of this post so I don't have to retype it the next time I have to repost it.

PS - I have already confirmed my post appeared in the forums by checking back. Hopefully a mod will actually note WHY they have deleted valuable information from the forums when they delete my post AGAIN.

I should also let those of you with drive troubles know that since flashing to DE05, my drive accesses EVERY disc I put in the drive, no problems, no longer as noisy as it was sounding like it was goind to rip off the side of the laptop, on top of that the access time is slightly lower.

I also benchmarked the drive (with SiSoft Sandra - found here: SiSoft Sandra Lite) and tested it with DELL'S OWN DIAGNOSTIC UTILITY (I bet someone tells me this will void my warranty) and no longer have read/write errors.

Originally, both my original and the drive they sent me (the one that's working correctly now w/DE05 firmware) would NOT read a disc when tested WITH DELL'S OWN DIAGNOSTIC UTILITY.

Gee. Maybe Dell should just outsource their tech support to me. Looks like I actually get things done for customers.

@Clarpet

I have just tested your solution and .... it works ! GREAT !

I have downgraded my TS-L462C drive to the DE05 firmware.

My Inspiron 6000 works again smoothly (and music listening, too).

Thank you very much ! :-)

Your informations are very useful to us (the DELL customers...) ;-)

... and DELL should remove the DE07 firmware from his site !!!

Thanks again.

Hi, I am also having troubles with the TSSTCorp TSL462C Combo drive for my Inspiron B120 notebook. It's out of warranty And I was just thinking of buying a new drive. Any other ideas? I've flashed it and upgraded all drivers, nothing works and the drive won't play cd's or dvd's of any fashion. I noticed one that was meant for the B130 on the replacement parts area of the dell support site, but since I do not have a B130 would this even work? I have read that the 120 and 130 are essentially the same but the depth on the 130 drive is 4.96" and on the 120 it is 5.08" Does this mean it would just sit further in? How could I tell if it would work?

Could this be a problem with something from Dell rather than TSST? I generally buy either Samsung or Panasonic and have done for YEARS. I'm not taking sides though and I don't own a Dell, but I run 3 simultaneous TSST and have used Samsung for as long as I can remember and I've only ever had 1 non-working 2X CD ROM drive in 1993 (or 1995), the drive was one of them where you put the CD into a tray and put the tray into the drive. Sometimes an outside oppinion is helpful. Hoping Dell won't erase my post and ban me from their site + send me hate mails and god forbid shipping me a Dell computer for free :P
