Will the new drive be the second drive or the only drive? If there is already a CD drive in the system, can you post the Brand and Model? Also, please post the Brand and model of the new drive.
The GCC-4482B is a Combo drive. It will read and write CD media and will only read DVD media. The GX240 comes in differnt cases. I assume your is a tower. To install this drive ........
Jumper it as cable Select (CS or CSEL). There is a block if pins that has a jumper across two pins. Move the jumper to the Cable Select Position. A typical jumper is as shown here (red circle) .............
Armed with this knowledge, shutdown the system. Open the case. Install the new drive and connect it to the same cable the old drive is using. their is a connector for it on the same cable. Connect a power connector to the new drive. There is already a spare one there. Close the system and power up.
Press F2 while the blue Dell is shown and enter the Set-up. Find the Secondary IDE Channel and see the two CD drives there. Set each to AUTO if not already so.
Exit and save and upon boot-up to Windows, the system will auto install both drives.
Thank you so much for the info...that was really helpful. Does dell make a cd/dvd burner for my Optiplex. I would like to be able to edit home movies on our computer.
Yes, but is is desirable to purchase a DVD burner elsewhere due to cost, unless Dell is having a sale. You still didn't say what case your GX240 is. It will accept standard IDE Devices. If you have a SFF (Small Form Factor) it will only take one single notebook drive. I assume that is not the system you have. Good brands of DVD Burners are Plextor, Pioneer, NEC and Lite-on. They will range From $80 to as low as $40. Shop are www.newegg.com
. They have a large choice and are a high regarded seller.

here is the GX240 Service Manual. It shows how to open the system and
move components in and out.
