Dell Inspiron 8600 series hard drive problem =/

Question

hey guys, new here so not sure all of what i need to give ya to help out, but this morning i got home, went to turn on my laptop, got the dell screen etc etc all going good until it just sits at a black screen... then this pops up 'Hard disk read failure- No bootable devices--strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility'   so, as any other annoyed customer would be, i pressed F1 until my fingers went numb and i pulled out half my hair, then i tried searching forums for help, and i could only find a similar problem on models such as the 4000....   the setup utility is something i didn't want to mess with with such little experience with the makeup of computers, and honestly i don't wanna mess with anything from the Dell FAQ up there till i can get some outside input... i've broken too many things in my time haha =)   any help would be greatly appreciated guys =) thx

Edit:

i ran the dell diagnostic (as i coninued my search thru the forums) and a failure came up on

"DST Short Status Test

Test results: fail

Error code: 1000-0142

Msg: unit 4: drive self test failed. status byte = 75."

afterwards its teling me to insert my drivers and utilities CD, if i could find it... while i look..
"No diagnostic Utility Partition Found."

and then it says i need my CD to run the rest of the disagnostics, if there's anything else i can do besides insert the cd, plz tell me? =) thanks again

Edit: found my disc, put it in and booted as told, and it comes up with the same error... im lost =/

Replace the drive, reload and patch Windows, and restore your backups. The drive has failed.
