quasi_state,

Thank you for visiting the Dell Community Forum.

We generally have no information concerning if/when updates are released until they are released to the File Library. You can periodically search the File Library to check if any updates have been released for a particular drive model.

I am having a lot of trouble to burn ARITA DVD+R disks. The disks are from the same bundle I used before when I still had my old PC with a NEC 1300a burner, not a single disc gave a problem. With my Dell 8300 and its TEAC DVD+RW DV-W58E burner I get the following error message from Nero 5.5.xxx (same app. as I used on my old PC) on each disc I burn:

Invalid field in command.

Could not perform end of Disc at once.

These messages appear at the end of the burning process.

I was wondering if these problems are known with other brands of DVD discs too. And are there any updates of the BIOS firmware planned (e.g. is Dell going to support the hardware)?

BTW: when I burn the same session on a Philips DVD + RW there are no error messages.

Thanx,

Dutchie

I spoke with tech support at Dell and got an email followup that was kind of weird.  According to the email the drive will not burn +RW unless you use the software that came with the system (RecordNow).  I can't imagine that is correct.  Are they hinting at the DLA software that comes bundled with that program?   Either way this does not solve my problem as I refuse to use that piece of software.

I email TEAC to see if they have anything in the works as far as firmware is concerned.  I'll post as I get more information.

@dutchieholland:

my problem with this dvd burner is, that nero 5.5.10.42 or higher is not able to recognize the burning device. nero shows only an image-recorder!

do i need an upgrade to nero 6.0?

regards

Try downloading Nero 6 Ultra Demo and see if that helps.  I have been able to use Nero with this drive with success.  The older versions may not have complete support for the device.  Also, if Nero has failed the burning process before with the drive it has most likely forced the device interface to change from DMA to PIO on the IDE channel.  Sometimes it makes writing more difficult and inconsistant.

Is anyone else having trouble using the TEAC DVD burner with +R type media? I can burn fine with +RW but have had almost no success with +R at any speed (the media) or different brands.

Do I have a defective drive?

Thanks

Well the problem may be that the drive cannot write at a consistantly slow enough speed for +R media under 6X.  I'm still working on this without tangilbe help from phone support so I'll keep those interested updated on the info.  In the meantime I'll just keep posting, calling, and emailing until someone gives a darn about my problem (Cody and Stephen are cool, I'm just steamed with phone tech support).

After reading your post I thought I'd better give it a try,  all I had burned with the new TEAC DVD+RW DV-W5E was a few standard audio CDR's.  The Sonic RecordNow software is pretty generic and basic but it worked fine.  I've still been using my NEC DVD+RW N-1100A in my Dell 8250 since I had not got everything like I wanted on my new 8300 yet.  Then I read something about these new TEAC drives not working with any software but Sonic and got worried.  So here's the results:

I installed the latest Nero 6 Ultra Edition 6.3.0.0  on the 8300 and burned a few data only DVD's and had no errors or problems at all.  I burnt 2 DVD+RW's (2.4X) and 2 DVD+R's (4X), both blank DVD's  were "Verbatim DataLifePlus"  The +RW's come in green packs and the +R's in purple packs.

So the TEAC DVD+RW is backward compatible and will burn 4X Disks and as far as I can tell at this point the Sonic and Nero 6 programs can live happily together also.

Just for your info my 8300 has "nothing" starting in the msconfig startup folder and only 13 possesses running just after startup.  I got rid most all of the Dell installed cr*p and cleaned the registry.  I don't even have antivirus or firewall software installed yet, because the 8300 is not on the net yet.  Maybe your problems are due to other software or running processes or the TEAC just don't like that brand.

@quasi_state: thanx for your help. i did what you said and upgraded nero to version 6.0. now the software recognizes my dvd burner automatic.

in the meantime i burnt two blank memorex +dvd's (4x) and one philips +rw (2,4) without any problems!

nero and the teac burning device are now working perfect together.

I've disabled all startup items and non-WinXP services in MSCONFIG.  Also, I've tried to use Sony, Memorex, Maxell, and K-Hypermedia +R media without much luck.  I have 9 running WinXP apps in background.

Sorry, not sure what your problem could be.  9 Applications is a ton of stuff running though, are you sure that's Applications or Processes.  You shouldn't have 9 Applications running when burning a disk, even on a high powered PC.  ALT-CTRL-DELETE  will show you what's running in both.  You really shouldn't use misconfig to disable Services, use Administrative Tools>Services to disable Services.  Startup items are fine to disable with misconfig though.

I should have been more specific in my last post.  It was processes not applications that are running.  I have received the new DVD drive from Dell and will put it in after work.  I'll update as things develop.  Thanks.

I think I too am having problems with the Teac Drive. I have the same configuration as some of you..16x DVD and 8x Combination Drive. So far, all I have been able to do is burn music.

When I try to burn pictures from Kodak's Easyshare program ( bought through Dell with computer ), the Kodak software says it cannot recognize the drive ( E ).

Might downloading the Nero Software cure this problem?

If so, can you point me to the download ?

Thanks in advance

I'm not sure if just installing Nero will fix your problems.  I have not had any problems with the preinstalled Sonic software, it just didn't have enough features for me.  Installing more software if there is already some kind of problem could make things worse, but if you want to try it, make sure your System Restore is turned on or you have some other way to go back.

Here's were you can download the complete Nero 6 Ultra Editon Trail Package, you can buy a Serial Number later if you like it.  You better be on a broadband connection though.  It's hands down the best burning package I've ever used and I've tried most of them.

To add all the help files to the Nero programs, not sure why they are separate.

The new drive is working great.  I can burn to all kinds of +R media now including cheap slow speed stuff like K-Hypermedia 2.4X.  I am using CloneDVD as my burning tool.
