Odds are it's a software problem but Dell Diagnostics is a good tool for verifying the hardware. Since it's a random problem, it could be a harder-to-detect intermittent hardware failure. RAM hardware seems like a valid candidate for random crashes, and you might run extended tests in Dell Diagnostics to prove it' reliability or conversely, verify that is the cause.
Software do crash. The second law of thermodynamics, regarding entropy, seems just as valid in the virtual world. The world is going to somewhere in a handbasket. A chain is only as strong as it's weakest link. You can't herd cats. I need more coffee.
Details regarding system hardware and software, operational characteristics, crash symptoms, and other information might be useful when planning a course for troubleshooting.
I know my post was vague. I have XP operating system and did run the diagnostic test (extended version). The only thing it found was the cd/dvd rom failed.

if there's an error messege, try to look for possible fix using google or support.microsoft.com.
you can try fixing it using recovery console or for worst case scenario, reinstall windows.
