I have not personally used that drive in an I8100 but it should work.

Here is a link stating which drive will work in the laptops.
 
 
According to the link, YES that drive will work in your laptop.

I also have a Inspiron 8100 and I am just curious to see if this hard drive worked for jwc19.  The link that
bobyjo posted is for the 5400RPM drive.  Here is the link for the 7200RPM drive:
 
 
This link does not have the Inspiron 8100 listed as compatible. I was thinking about ordering the 100gb 7200RPM version but wanted to make sure that it would work. If not, I will just get the 5400RPM version.  I really want the faster drive though.
 
Any advice will  be greatly appreciated.

The computer doesn't care what the RPM of the drive is, it will work fine.

This drive works great in my 8100. Easy to install, didn't even have to revalidate win xp.

 

MUCH faster, and no more annoying clicking sounds from the drive!
