I have seen a slightly jammed Emergency Eject Button cause issues like this. Click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 13-0, article 22 and run these steps. See if anything there helps.
You might also consider the Dell firmware update for the drive.

Tallpaulmold, You cannot rule out spyware or a virus. My naive sister let some joker talk her into visiting a web site of his, afterwards told her she had aliens in her PC and started opening the trays on her optical drives, then writing across her desktop. I ended up just reformating the system to clean out the mess. Jump over to the Special Interest-Virus conference and check out the FAQ at the top of the conference, this will not hurt.
