Inspiron 8600 with Samsung SN-324 CDRW/DVD will no longer recognize CD's

Question

I have had this computer and Samsung SN-324 drive for a little over a year and have been using it with no problems until yesterday. I have been using the drive a lot recently to rip my CD's into iTunes. Yesterday it stopped recognizing the CD's but it will still recognize DVD's. I have tried to follow the Dell troubleshooting and have not had any success. Why would it stop recognizing CD's but still work with DVD's? Any thoughts on how to fix this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Exact same situation on my Inspiron 9100 with Sony dual layer DVD/ CD-RW.  Maybe an automatic update messed  something up.  Please post your resolution if any, I'll do the same.  Similar thread on this board shows several others with different systems and drives with same problem all within the last few days.

I haven't been able to get any info but after running through many different scenarios and getting a response on a different board it may very well be that the cd laser is dead but the dvd laser is still working.

That is all I know. I may very well be buying another drive.
