if you have a mediadirect button, download the following file and follow the directions in the text file. ignore the .pdf. it may not work, but it's the quickest method to try. you just have to burn an iso image to cd.

That just adds the function back to the hard drive. It doesn't reinstall all the software (DVD player, video drivers, audio drivers...) PM me and I'll let you know how to get all the software back on.

Dell addresses MediaDirect repair and reinstallation directly in this document. Contact Dell for the CDs.

Are you the original owner, and is the original hard disk drive still in the notebook or has it been replaced?

What does it say on the label of the CD you are using?

This is a brand new computer with its original hard drive.  The CD received from DELL is for "Reinstalling DELL MediaDirect".

Doesn't the document state to use the Repair Utility CD when the original disk is still there and you want to get MediaDirect working again, and that the process may not complete properly if the Reinstallation CD is used when the Repair Utility CD is called for?

Yes.  I downloaded the Repair Utility from DELL and followed the instructions.  It does not work and will not complete the repair.
