No apologies necessary, may I ask, what is the name/model of the drive in question? You can go to Device Manager, click the "+" next to DVD\CD-ROM drives and list them here.

I don't immediately know...I'm a cyber-neanderthal when it comes to this stuff. All I can tell you for now is that it came with the Dimension 4300 when my parents got it for me in 2002.
Right Click on the "My Computer" icon on the desktop, select Properties, then click on the Hardware tab, you should then see Device Manager, then click the "+" next to DVD\CD-ROM drives. You should see the name(s) of your optical drives. If you could list them here, someone can check the User Guides to see what type of drive you have and the formats it supports.

Even if it were a DVD Burner, you could only burn using software. XP has no DVD burning ability included.
