Go into Device Manager and click on the "+" sign next to the CD/DVD-ROM drive.  Note the model number.  Then Google the model number and you'll find lots of info on the drive.

Ah... is there no other way? I am thinking of buying one and I would like to know more about it (or which serials to look for) before shipping it over and putting it into my lappy.

Though, thanks for the reply! :)

Where are you planning to purchase the drive from as an online retailer will put up the drive specifications on the Web page.

I'm planning on buying one off of eBay and would like to be able to double check that it IS DL before buying it. I could just go by vendor listings, however, I would like to be certain because I have come across some that are listed as DL in the title, but then DL is mentioned nowhere in the description (while everything else is).

I tried calling Dell Spare Parts, but they tried to talk me into buying this exclusive $100 thing from them. And they refused to give me the product number. :-(

Why don't you just tell us the manufacturer and model?  Or plug it into any search engine and find the specs.

...because I don't have that information. Good idea though, I'll ask the seller what he has and then I'll look it up. Which numbers am I interested in though, the one the gray dell sticker or the white sticker (here's an example off of eBay):

Gray
Dell LBL P/N: C3284 A00

White
Model: DW-Q58A-DF
DP/N 0FD318
CN-0FD318-55081-61L-4171

Drive Link

Thanks guys!

Here's the users guide for that drive: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/storage/p94658/.

It burns +R DL media.

Personally, I think the $80 starting price for for that drive is too high.  Go to www.newegg.com and look for slim-line DVD writers.  The same drive is cheaper there.  You can also get the NEC 6750A for $70.  IMO it's a better drive.

I didn't know you could buy 'generic' drives off of NewEgg. So that will just drop into my CD/DVD/HDD slot? Is there anything I can do about the face not really matching up with the color/contour of my 9100?

Thanks for the support link, now I can see all those model numbers!

Careful.  I have the same exact part number on the drive I have, and it's not the same.  Mine is (I believe) an NEC-6560A, so I believe there are different drives made for this particular part number.

I found this because I was searching for a firmware update for my drive, as it is giving me errors as of late, and I've never had problems with it before.

His drive may be completely different as well.
