Hi Split,

Lets start with a few standard steps:
Click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 15, article 1; Section 20, article 3. These will cover any possible driver issue.

Best Regards!

Predator, thanks for your time and suggestions.  I consulted your link before and here is what I did so far:  uninstalled both, device and IDE Controller:  did not work.  Removed Multimedia (can not switch it back on, since the device does not read CD Rom), disabled Sonic DLA: it did not help.  Now iTunes is giving me message that some of its components are missing and should be reinstalled.  I am wondering if there is a compatibility issue with iTunes, since I had glitches with it from the beginning...  Or am I off the track here?  Being clueless, further suggestions would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Hi Split,

We have seen a number of issues with iTunes. Consider uninstalling iTunes, then run the Dell article on the Upper & Lower Filters, ignore the reference to Roxio. Same CD/RW link, Section 12, article 10.

Best Regards!
