Boot problem with Dell Dimension

Question

When I turn on my computer, the Dell screen appears and it seems like it will boot normally.  Then the screen goes black except for a blinking cursor in the upper left corner.  The hard disk light is not on at this time.  The computer just seems to be locked up.  After 10 minutes or so in this condition, the hard drive is accessed and Windows will start normally.  Windows loads relatively quickly and I do not experience any more problems after booting up.  This time frame of being locked up is getting progressively longer each time.  It did not seem to take as long when these problems first started.   Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Oops, this is the second one of these questions I've seen today. That usually means there is an MS update that has messed up something. Let me see if I can track it down.

I have the same problem with my 5150 dimension comp.
I see also a blinking point at the left side of the screen.
I wait a hour, and nothing is hapening. Do you have find a awser for this problem. Sorry, for my english i am comming from Belgium( Europe).

Hai Bev,   That's the problem, when y start the Boot to Utility' Partition, he tells me that the utility partition is not available.   the  strike F1 or F2 to ............

the power button is solid green, and the led of the hard drive is solid green, and stays so all the time all the leds are blinking, not together of corse. When the led of the hard drive is on all the other control led are out.

philuitberleer   Run Dell diagnostics. Reboot the computer, when the Dell logo appears, press F12, highlight the 'Boot to Utility' Partition, then 'Enter', and choose the 'Extended' test.   Bev.

When y start the computer with a CD XP windows(start with a CD), then he find just a partion whit 131GB from the 250GB, the aother +-120Gb is gone. also that the 120Gb is already described.
