most probably the drive is bad..however what u can do is update the drivers and go to start--> run ---> services.msc and start the IMAPI service.Hope that solves the problem. Also try running in safe mode.
To trouble shoot this drive, please click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 15, article 1; Section 20, article 3; Section 12, article 10 (ignore the reference to Roxio) Windows will reinstall the proper drivers once you restart the system. These are standard steps, try one, if it does not help, move to the next. Unfortunatly we have been seeing a lot of this message lately.
Best Regards

There is a CD/RW link, once you click on it, go to Section 15, article 1; These articles are Support articles from Dell, Microsoft, Members, etc.... I will check my previous post for any typos, I am bad for that, sorry...

Just an FYI and please do not take this wrong but I have already covered the driver issue, in Section 15, article 1 of the CD/RW link in my first post. Also it is not a Philips drive, it is a Lite-On 489, currently I cannot find a firmware update for this model.
Mark,
Please list the name of your Dell system, 2400, 4600, etc

It is a Dell Dimension 3000. I tried the three references in the CD/RW link that was previously provided. Still have the same old problem. I get the message "Please Insert a disk in Drive D."
I tired the software in my other computer and it works. I also have done a system restore to a month ago. Still have the same problem.
I found one Lite-on in the Drivers & Downloads link for your system, but it does not state 489. You can give it a try, if it does not match, the firmware will not run.
As Saurabh mentioned, testing the drive in another PC is an option if you have that available. However and being honest, you have spent more money in time than what this drive is worth. You can get a good Retail NEC DVD+/-RW for less than $35 at New Egg, just a thought my friend.
Best Regards

I am getting a similar problem with neither Nero nor Roxio recognising that there is a blank cdr in the drive, but instead insisting that the drive is 'empty'. I have of course tried many different blanks and I get the same result every time.
I can play cds okay, and up until a month ago (the last time I burned any cds) I was having no trouble at all with burning. To make things even stranger, Nero does recognise a blank dvd-r and will happily burn to it - it's just cdrs that it resolutely refuses to admit are present.
I have had a Dimension 3100 for about five months, and as indicated have not had this problem before. I have burned dozens of cdrs and yesterday was the first time that I have experienced this problem.
Has anyone got any ideas as to what the problem might be please?
Did you check the Drivers & Downloads link for your system to see if Dell may have a firmware update available for your drive?

I have gotten a couple of e-mails from Members that had similar issue, burn DVD`s but CD`s, some were fixed with a firmware update, other were replaced. Will the drive burn a CD-R through XP built-in program. Section 100, article 27 of the CD/RW link in my post? If it will not, please contact Dell, reference this thread to the Tech, if under warranty the drive may need replacing.
Best Regards!

Thanks for the suggestion.
I did find a firmware update, downloaded it and restarted the computer...but the problem persists - still no disc in the drive!
I am baffled by this, firstly because I've never had the problem before and secondly because as I said earlier dvd-rs are not a problem!
