Not really my area -- but I would start by checking that the Nero s/w (presumably new-ish) supports the (elderly) DVD/CD drive.
Also, at the risk of asking a dumb question, if you can play music, read data and watch DVDs, what do you want the Nero s/w for?
The Intel chipset drivers you refer to are hard-wired into XP -- you can't use ones from Intel. So if you're XP SP2 and fully up-to-date on critical updates, there isn't any more you can do.
Actually, all I really wanted from the Nero Disk was the Media player because I liked what I saw after I loaded it onto my Dimension (it has a very nice full screen pan and play option). Since it came with the new DVD-RW for my Demension, I figured why not...it was free. I wanted something different from Windows Media Player 11 which is what I used before trying Nero. But it's moot point becuase I made sure all traces were removed when the installation failed 3/4 of the way through. However, as soon as I slide the Matsushita DVD/CD Rom drive back into the computer, things quickly go awry and soon thereafter comes the Blue Screen. I am going to put the old drive (which works sometimes but then fails unpredictably) and see what happens. Like you, I'm on unfamliliar ground and logic often doesn't seem to be the rule.
Appreciate the thoughts though. Sometimes pecking away at an issue from various directions of thought resolves it.
