Hi Ralph,

Just to cover as much as possible; you set the jumper on the new drive to cable Select (CS), not Master/Slave; installed DVD decoding software, example PowerDVD, WinDVD, set the Region Code, correct?

Best Regards

I just noticed that the Nero 7 software doesn't even have DVD as an option any more.

The drive I have in it now came out of my other computer.
It is set as the master as was the drive I pulled out of my Dimenstion 2400.

I'm not sure what Cable select is.

I'm using Nero 7.  It works great on the DVD/CD burner I have in it now.

Shouldn't it detect the new drive automaticly?

Hi Ralph,

Cable Select uses the IDE cable itself to determine Master/Slave, the drive on the "End" attachment will be the Master; the drive in the "middle will be the Slave. It usually does not work well if you mix jumper settings, per say one Cable Select and the other either Master or Slave.
One can still use the old Master / Slave setting, but one drive must have the jumper on "Master" and the other on "Slave".
Unless someone has changed the settings, Dell default jumper on thier factory installed drives will be Cable Select (CS). I am sorry, it has been a long rough day at work and your post has me somewhat confused, I am not sure what setting you actualy have for each drive on the IDE cable.

As for Nero detecting the drive, in theory it should and most of the time it does, but there have case where it does not and one has to reinstall the software, or Uninstall the drive from Device Manager and re-boot the system.

Best Regards

After I played with Nero 7 for another hour I removed it from the computer and loaded Nero 6.6.

I haven't tried to burn a DVD yet but it plays DVD perfectly.

I'm not sure why Nero 7 demo would not do the job, but it didn't.

I know that I'm on the right track, but I wonder why was up with Nero 7.

Hi Ralph,

I knew there were some bugs in version 7 but I had thought most had been taken care of. I still use version 6.6, knock on wood, works well.
If you decide to give 7 a try again, use Nero`s Clean Tool to remove all of version 6 first. (you might wish to write down any Product Key for Nero)

Best Regards
