Hi Aleo,

Dell has had a number of issues with this drive.
Run these steps: click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 20, article 3; Section 12, article 10 (ignore the reference to Roxio); Section 15, artilce 13 to verify that the drive is running in DMA mode and not PIO mode.
If either of these helps, great; if not, then try the Dell firmware for the drive, Dell has two; run this one first:
Version A03
If this does not help, then Version A04
If none of this helps, please do not waste any more time with me, contact Dell, request the Tech to reference this thread and respectfully ask for the drive to be replaced (if under warranty). Dell is dealing with this drive on a case by case issue.

Best Regards!

God, grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway,

I have a new Dell Dimension 9150. Perhaps 75% of the attempts at writing DVD ROMS failed. I tried 8x and 16x DVD+R disks, at max and lower speeds. I also tried the bundled Roxio software, and Nero 6. But no matter what, most of the time the writing would end early in the writing cycle, giving an unknown write error message.

The drive was a Hitachi-LG HL-DT-ST GSA-1121N drive. I upgraded the BIOS to A106 (or whatever the latest available is). I also tried the hardware verification on bootup, which reported no problems.

The only solution for me was to contact the Dell tech support. They sent a replacement Philips drive, which has performed flawlessly.

So beware of these HL drives... not good quality at all.

NP.
