I used a different hd and it works perfectly as a test to see what happens when I disconnect the cable.

What pattern of LEDs is showing on the back panel?

What happens if you disconnect the hard drive (which has likely failed)?

Because the two least expensive LEDs are amber and green.

You've answered your own question in a prior post - the hard drive has failed; replace it.

Ya, I'm color blind to a degree that I have a very difficult time determining the difference between yellow and green. I mean, come on.... Why don't they just make them yellow and blue or something so EVERYONE can tell the difference? O well, there's got to be another way (I hope)...

finally, how would I optain a reinstallation CD (since these people didn't get one when they ordered the computer...)?

With D-4400, Dell shipped all the CDs, required for a complete reinstallation of windows, drivers, utilities and applications, including the XP reinstallation disk, that would look similar to this,
