By reinstalling XP.

XP is fairly flexable about reassigning drive letters, except for the floppy drive and the drive that XP is installed on.

If you have an internal media card reader, try disconnecting it prior to reinstalling XP.

Thank you.

However, it is the main drive which is wrongly named.  Did I miss an option to name the drive when I loaded XP?  I don't to re-do everything if I get the same result.  I did see in another part of the forum a similar problem but unfortunately couldn't find it a second time.

Yes, you made a mistake installing XP, read Part two of the following,

http://www.windowsreinstall.com/winxppro/installxpcdoldhdd/index.htm

You delete all partitions and then recreate them, followed by formatting the hard drive.

Happy to hear everything is working again and you have the C: / partition back.  :smileyhappy:

Hi

I've re-formatted the drive, deleted the partitition I had inadvertently created, and re-installed Windows XP and the main drive is now C, so all seems to be well.  I thought I'd lost all sound, but found the drivers on the Dell disk.

Many thanks.
