I didn't see anything when I clicked on the + under properties, but when I clicked on the -, under properties I found this:

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device.

Look in the Device Manager .........

Click on the (+) next to DVD/CD-ROM drives.  Right-click the drive and select
Properties.  Is there an Error Code?

Bless you, bless you! It will now again play a DVD. However, something is still not quite right.

First of all, when I use Media Direct, after fast forwarding through the previews, it then freezes when it gets to the controls for the main feature, when I am trying to exit back out of the movie. I have to use ctrl-alt-delete to end the program.

Also, I have this icon in my status bar, on the lower right corner of my desktop. It says I have low disk space on my backup (D) drive, and it's a brand new computer. Yes, we have downloaded some stuff, but not THAT much! Something is still wrong.

The removal of the Filters restores the drive.  The only effect it may have on software is to occasionally
require the burning software to be installed.  You may want to post these other problems in the Software -
Other Software board here ............
