Your 3000 came with whatever you ordered. Please check device manager (Right click My Computer, Properties, Hardware tab, Device manager) under CD/DVD devices to see what model you have and post back when you can.
To answer your second question, yes. You only need a CD writer to write discs, and it can also read discs.
Ok i found the device manager and it had " HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4481B" im not sure what that means. The computer was a gift from my dad and he says that he was very sure he ordered one that could make CD's but i thought that you needed a whole seperate drive for that...but i was reading some other posts and im not sure.
