Not sure what burning software Dell is shipping with this system, however in the past it was Sonic`s DLA program. DLA has been known to cause similar issues, if per chance you have it, consider disabling it and see if that helps. Click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 13-0, article 12.

I tried your suggestion, and yes I do have DLA on my machine, and it was already disabled. I tried both enabling and disabling it and rebboting in between each try with no luck. I guess it's time to move on to good old tech support. Great..... what a crummy way to spend my weekend. I would like to find out more about updating the DVD/RW Drives firmware before I call Dell .
Is it common to have problems like this with DVD/RW drives. Is this related to XP having no native ability to support DVD/RW drives.
This is new territory for us due to the drives in your system being SATA instead of IDE. I would double check the SATA cable which is a pretty standard step as well as uninstalling the drive from Device Manager and re-booting. With the old IDE, this helped at times.
