U use western digital external drives with very good luck. I have a 500GB My book and a 250 that I use on a lot of Dell's from servers, notebooks, and all kinds of dimensions, and workstations.
it could be a usb driver thats causing the problem... i have a webcam which ever since installed on the same usb2 port than my external drive runs on gives a error every once in a while... but any usb2 external drive should work

Thought I'd post an update for anyone else that might have the same issue I had. I have completely resolved my problem thanks to this forum and am delighted by the plethora of information available and thought I'd give a little back to perhaps help someone else in the future.
See previous post for background.
1. The problem was not my USB ports... I didn't need to buy a HUB.
2. The problem was my Dell Dimension 3000 that wouldn't recognize SimpleTech's Drive
3. The SimpleTech Drive worked fine on another (generic) comptuer and I was able to backup to it and restore information from the SimpleTech Drive. Dell just would not recognize the drive and instead kept telling me that the drive malfunctioned. SimpleTech had only a single suggestion... update the chipset. Well, that did nothing, nada, zip, zilch.
4. I purchased, after suggestions from tphillips63 and ronaldson1 (Thank you both), a 250GB My Book Western Digital External Hard Drive from Circuit City today (Great price at $99.95). Brought it home, plugged it in... PRESTO!! I GOT BACK UP BABY!!!
So, despite Dell and SimpleTech, my problem is resolved.
Thanks Dell and SimpleTech for cooperating on this problem... yeah, right!! (As both parties keep pointing fingers at the other guy... scratching their heads and exclaiming, "Not my fault!!!").
