That was a great lead but, this second drive isn't shown in disk management either.

I went out and brought a new serial cable today, thinking it was the cable but that doesn't work either.

1) not shown in Bio's

2) not shown in Disk Management

What next Bev????

Cobraiv.

See if the following generic instructions for installing an additional hard drive using Windows XP Disk Management, can help.  They are by Seagate, but apply to all brands

In the BIOS, check to see if the setting for the new Hard Drive (i.e. Primary Slave) is set to Auto.

Enter your BIOS (F2) and scroll down to Drive Configuration and press Enter.  Then scroll down to the drive location (i.e. Primary Slave) and press the Space Bar until the setting reads Auto.  Exit saving changes and allow the computer to boot.  Log on and right click on My Computer and select Manage, then select Disk Management.  If the Drive shows, you will need to right click on it and select Format.  After formatting is complete, you will need to right click on the drive and select Mark Partition as Active.

Make sure that you are using an 80 wire 40 pin connector and that both hadr drives are set to Cable Select.

Dave,

Thanks for the good info but, unfortunately that won't work either  because the hard drive I am trying to install is -an (SATA) Barracuda which is only 2 - months old from my 1st  Dell computer. I was trying to retrieve the data from the Barracuda using the replacement  computer which is identical. I went down to the PC Store and purchased a new serial cable, thinking that might have been the problem but, I still can't read the drive in BIO's or XP's computer management.

Do you if know if I can get my data retrieved from Seagate (Barracuda) or Dell perhaps?

I am going thru the exact same thing. I just installed an 80gb HD as a slave. The drive shows up in disk management, but the option to initialize the drive is not there. When I right click on the new drive, the only options I get are

New Partition.... (Grayed out)
Properties
Help

There is no option to initialize the new HD. The link to the Seagate Support page assumes that I have the option to initialize, so that link is no help to me either. What now?

This is a Dell Dimension 8200 1 ½ years old running XP Home.

Right clicking there got me the initilize option. I did that, and a red circle that was over the dirve icon is now gone. I now have the option of “New Partition...” I thought I had to format the HD first. I don’t intend to partition the drive, but leave it as one drive. What do I do now? If I partition, does the option to format the HD come up?

I added a 200gb HD as a slave to a 40gb HD on a w2k machine once, and didn’t have these problems.

Make sure your right clicking in the correct spot. Right click on the lower listing not the top window. Right click in the body of the listing (to the right) not in the data part (to the left). You may need to format prior to activating the partition. Format should be an option when you right click.

It doesn't matter. As long as your Motherboard has SATA connectors on it. It's the same instructions, only select SATA Primary and change to Auto. On my 4600 the Primary (0) SATA connector is the lower one and the Secondary (1) is the top one. I ran Seagate SATA Barracuda 120's on my 4600 until the noise level got on my nerves too much. I then switched to my current configuration.
One problem I had is that my system always wanted to boot from the SATA's, even when the OS was on an IDE HDD. This can be over come by pressing F10 during boot and selecting your boot option. Then you should be able to retrieve your data.

A hard drive can be one or many partitions. Selecting new partition will enable you to select what type of partition (i.e. Extended, MBR, etc...) and then you can select the size and format. Each type gives an explination as you go.

That worked fine. I just don’t do this enough, and I sleep too much in between. Thank you for the help. New HD formatted, and working just fine. :)

Off subject question. I picked the HD by searching for a compatible HD by putting my service tag in at Dell.com. It was a 80gb Seagate HD. I went back a month later, did the same search, and got the same HD, and ordered it. I left it sit unopened until today. I bought it Dec 9. I was surprised to find it was an Hitachi HD when I opened the box. There was absolutely no documentation with it, so I don’t even know if it is 7200 rpm as the Seagate was. It seems to work fine, and it’s probably too late to return it anyway. I didn’t even know Hitachi made HD’s. Are these as reputable as Seagate?

Welcome to the world of the Hitachi DEATHSTAR.  I would call Dell and raise *** with them.  You ordered a Seagate not a Deathstar.  They are probably trying to get rid of all they have in stock.

In the email confirmation I received when I ordered the HD, this is all the info that was there
***************
DELL
80GB Internal EIDE Ultra ATA/100 7200RPM Hard Drive for Dell Desktops Qty: 1
***************

On the packing slip that came with the HD all it said was

***************
CUS,HD,80GB,1,7.2K,01,SGT-SNO
***************

The web page now does not seem to show Seagate, but it did when I ordered it. I’m not sure what it shows now. I had to look very close to see that it was a Seagate when I ordered it. I didn’t look at the label on the HD, other than noticing that it was Hitachi and not Seagate.

Is Hitachi not known for reliable HD’s? It seems to work fine. All I’ve done is to drag a file over, then delete it.
