I guess my friend it could be both, did you try the Windows "fix all", (uninstall from Device Manager), also reloading the IDE controller?
We had a drive at work that ended up being the emergency eject button, someone had used it and it sort of was stuck slighty. I worked it a few times and the problem stopped.
Best Regards!

I've already unistalled the drive in Device Manager, but hadn't thought of removing the IDE controller.
I have SATA hard drives so this will be fairly painless.
Probably a little out of practice with things like removing IDE controllers with not having IDE hard drives.
What of course is more odd is that at times the drive behaves normally. Push button = open, push button = close.
I'd taken to disabling the drive in Device Manager
Will try the IDE controller this evening.
Still not 100% convinced on VISTA, waiting for my copy of RC2 which is supposed to be better. I've got Office XP runing under Vista now, not using any compatability mode though.
Let me know if you trace it back to Vista. We are still checking for help files, documentation of these new SATA optical drives, still virgin terrority to some degree.
Best Regards
