I haven't done a lot of burning with my DW-Q58A (I mainly use my desktop drives) but I've had no problem burning Sony and Maxell 8x DVD+R, Verbatim 16x (at 8x) DVD-R and Verbatim DVD+R dual layer media. I'd stay away from Memorex media.
I'm using firmware UYS3. For some reason I can't post the link. Google "DW-Q58 firmware" and you'll find it.
Note that this drive is a rebadged Lite-On drive and can be crossflashed. I tried it and didn't notice any improvement so I went back to the Sony firmware.
I have the same drive with the same firmware UDS2 and have had no issues at all with burning to Sony DVD media + or -, and TDK or Imation cd-r's. I use Verbatim DVD's for dual layer burning and have had no issues also. So far, I really like this drive.
Ok just thought I'd give an update from my thread above my laptop came with firmware UDS2 so I tried UYS3 and I must say my drive is less fussy now I'm now able to use Datawrite DVD-R and Datawrite DVD+R DL and I couldn't before so it's seems that it's a worthy upgrade...
