What software are you using to try to burn the files to the disc?  You can't just copy files to it like you would on a floppy.

Hello RoadiJeff,

Your comment sent me to the laptop’s manual => I should be using SonicNow.  However, after  copying files (JPEG) to the DVD+RW, I can’t read those files => I get the following message: “Please insert a disk into drive D:”  I have removed & returned the DVD+RW in Drive D several times, with the error message appearing each time.  (Initially, the mouse pointer converts to an hourglass for about 30 seconds, then returns to normal, with the error message still showing.)

Hopefully the solution to this will be something as simple as the first problem.  ;-)

Thanks again,

Richard Evans

Richard,

The only thing I can think of that might be causing the problem is if the session was left open after it finished burning the files.  That function is designed to be able to add additional files at a later time but it can sometimes cause no-read conditions with the disc.

Hello Jeff,

Right again! I should have remembered my rule: When life (technology) fails, REBOOT!

I apologize for asking such basic questions, but this is the first time I have used DVD’s.

One more simple riddle: When displaying the “Properties” of the DVD I just copied files to, the “Used Space” is reported as 1.47 GB & the “Free Space” is ‘0” bytes.  I checked a new DVD & its Used/Free values are both “0”??

Thanks again,

Richard Evans

The zero bytes free space has to do with the Windows OS.  As you've already discovered, Windows cannot write files directly to a DVD.  Because of that it cannot interpret the amount of available room left on the disc.
