Flash drives are O.K. but not as reliable as external hard drives. I picked up a Seagate External 80GB from Walmart for my 410 and have not had any problems. If the data is really important I'd back it up twice, once on an external and once on CD's or DVD's.
hehe the old back it up twice or more. That one you learn from experience beleive me.
The Seagates and Western Digital external drives work with Dells I here about problems with maxtors though.
The USB key is good but mostly for a sneaker net since it is such a small capacity. I was looking for a 2GB titanium but could not find it so I got a corsair 4GB instead but its for file transfers and portable apps not backups.
Maxtor backup drive has been buggy and troublesome for me, whereas I have not had any trouble with a new Western Digital external drive. Just one person's experience of course.
I do digital photo's and photo editing. I have used for years, the Lacie external drives. I have 4 500gb externals hooked up via firewire 800. These drives are compatible with USB2, firewire, and firewire 800. I have been buying the reconditioned units, and to date, haven't had one fail.
