I am having similar problems.  I think this drive needs recalling.  If all of us having problems with it would contact dell somehow, maybe we can get a recall.  May not help those of us that our warranty has run out.  Dell makes it difficult to contact them if you are out of warranty.  Any suggestions if anyone has contacted Dell on this issue and has gotten an answer.

Hi all. I bought my Inspiron 1150 in 2005 and I cannot copy anything onto cd's. It keeps saying that I do not have a cd burner drive, even though it states clearly on the documentation that I received from Dell, that it is a cd-rw and dvd drive. I never used my laptop for copying music to CD's before now as I used my sister's computer and so I didn't know that there was a problem until now! Does anyone know if Dell will fix this problem even if the laptop is now out of warranty?
