Max Hard Drive size on Optiplex 745

Question

I have been told that the motherboard restricts the SATA hard drives in the Optiplex 745 to 250 gig, and that is why Dell does not offer a 500 gig drive in that unit.  If I add a SATA card that has an internal connector, can I then put in a 500 gig internal drive connected to that card?  Thanks.

I haven't tried it, but I think the information you got is incorrect. There used to be a cap for drives up to about 137GB, but if a system supports larger than 137GB, it supports 48bit LBA, which has a cap way beyond anything available nowadays.

that limit should not apply to SATA.
