What happens if you disconnect the DVD/RW and just leave the DVD-ROM on the IDE cable, still popping noise? Have you moved the DVD/RW to the "End" connection of the IDE cable, leave the DVD-ROM off for now, popping noise with this drive?
Best Regards!

I am assuming the DVD-ROM sets in the Top Bay and this is the one that is making the noise; your DVD/RW is in the second bay and it is fine, correct?
I would first verify that your drives are running in DMA mode and not PIO mode. Please click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to section 15, articles 14 & 17. Did the Tech or you try a new IDE cable?
Best Regards!
