I'm sorry.. It is a Dimension 4700. Any other info that might be needed.. feel free to ask. I am not sure what info is needed........ What kind of hard drive do I need to get? Is there anything special to know about that? Is it something I can do myself or need to know about doing that? I've seen them in stores...??? I installed my second DVD/CD drive myself and set up my own wireless network at home.. so not totally a novice.. but not confident always in what I do.. if that helps with suggestions for me! I sure would appreciate any input. Thanks for telling me what the error meant.. it is what I was afraid of! I have been worried for some time this was what was giving me fits for somee time with things just not working right! Just purchased an E520... and had transfered files to xternal hd.. want this one for my teen age daughter though... was just foing in to wipe drive to see if that helped fix things :) didnt get the chance to try that though...

Verify test Error Code 0F00:1A44 > Uncorrectable data error code > Replace hard drive.

Bev.

Ps. It helps to post the computer model.

You need a SATA hard drive, if you system is under warranty, contact Dell for a replacement, give them the error message.

No warranty, Buy either a SATA1 or SATA2, 7200rpm, Seagate or Western Digital. Avoid Maxtor.

Check the lenght of the warranty, there's one to five years [Seagate] on hard drives.

Replacing the hard drive is a fairly easy, the harder part is reinstalling XP, drivers and applications on the new drive.

Yes, the Dell reinstallation disk is bootable.

This is a good guide for reinstalling XP,

and this is Dell's guide,

Drivers are installed in this order.

1.Chipset driver.  2.Video Card   3.Sound Card  4. Modem  5.Keyboard and mouse  6.Dell Security Center  7.Anti Virus.

Followed by the applications, remember to download the windows critical updates and Anti Virus updated definitions. Turn the Firewall on before going online.

Sounds great, reading and following Paul Thurrott's interactive guide should help you.  :smileywink:

This thread is 14 months old, you should find it better to post this, in the 'Software' forum, under the version of windows installed in your computer.

Always include the computer model and the version of windows in your post.
