Yes it is XP home. Can I do this while disk is hooked up via IDE converter or should I put old hardrive back in laptop. The old drive would not boot in safe mode. I got errors when trying this.
You need to take ownership of the files first. Note: if this is XP Home, you MUST boot into Safe Mode to do this. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421
I tried taking ownership bet the tab security was not visable. I used the net work wizard and conneted the folder to a network. I can now enter the folder but still get an error when trying to open the subfolders. I am one layer further but cannot enter my documents. Do you know how to make this possible?
Are you in safe mode? You will not be able to take ownership other than in safe mode. If you are in safe mode and still can't read the files, it's possible the damaged area of the disc contains those files.
Hi, was not in safe mode the first time but have done that in the meantime and I keep on getting errors when requiring ownership. I am being denied access to the subfolders. Anything else i can do or is it time to accept that I will not be able to retrive foto's and music........
