Thanks for your detailed insruction and the parts numbers. I just have one more question, where is th module bay located? Is it the same place as were you have the cd/cdrw/dvd/dvdrw unit? Do you have to swap the second HD and the cd/dvd/cdrw/dvdrw?
Oops that wasn't one question but anyway.
Thanks in advance.

Inspiron 8000, Win 2k
1400*1050 screen, Geforce2go 32mb (used to be 16mb ati)
PIII 1ghz (used to be PIII 850mz), 512mb ram
1st HD: Toshiba 60gb 7200 rpm
2nd HD: IBM 20gb 5400gb
Current (not so nice) machine 2:
HP compaq nx9010 Win XP(slow, noicy and to heavy)
1400*1050, ati radeon 345igp
P4 3ghz, 512mb ram
HD: 40gb 4200rpm
Thank you very much. Here is a related question: I already have the media bay carrier for a floppy disk. Can I just use that or do I need a specific one for hard drive? The only thing I can think of being different is the connector?!
To answer the question on where you would put the second hard drive, it would be in the media bay slot. As for using the media bay carrier for the floppy disk - no, you will not be able to use it. You would have to purchase a seperate media bay carrier for the HDD.
I bought a inspiron 8600 about six months ago and i want a bigger hard drive. My question is can I use my hard drive that is in my computer now, (30 gig factory installed) and use that as a 2nd one. You said it has to be 9.5 mm but I don't know the size of it and i can't find it anywhere. I want to put a 60 gig internally and use the one that is in there now as an extra in my media bay.

Thank you for using Dell's Community Forum.
Yes, the Inspiron 8600 can take two hard drives.
Also, the Inspiron 8600 has a max. RAM capacity of 2GB.

Do you have a link with docs about how to add a second hd to the Inspiron 8600?
Thanks,
