Have you tried using different blank disks?

Any chance you're trying to use inferior, inexpensive media like Memorex, Imation, or Staples house brand junk?

I have tried TDK, Maxell and Fuji. Additionally, out of a spool of 100, the first 60 worked OK.

Maxell media that is made in Japan is considered an excellent media. However the Maxell media made in Panama or Mexico can be problematic for some. I always read where it was manufactured before I buy it. The Maxells m.i.j. have worked beautifully for me here on my Plextor burner. Not a single bad burn yet.

You might want to list your burner model number so one of the people experienced in this can see if there is any firmware updates for it. Sometimes the manufacturer releases an update that addresses some glitches.

Mister Lee:

Before you reinstall Roxio, since this started with the installation of Roxio, let me suggest you try deleting the upper and lower filters, as shown here. Then check drive properties and make sure "Enable CD recording" is checked in the recording tab.

First, I am not working this thread, it is being addressed already.
However I have noticed an increase in the mentioning of Members going to the manufacturers site for firmware updates for Dell factory installed drives. John, Mike, Dave and myself that post here regularly know Dell`s standing on this policy but it seems a refresher may be neccessary. Dell policy is clear;

"The use on a non Dell validated firmware will void the warranty on the drive"

Fortunately our last two Moderators have allowed us to post some (depends on the site) non Dell firmwares that we know do work, remember though, we cannot guarantee these will work for everyone, nothing in this wondeful PC is 100%, We have been asked to include the above disclaimer and "you use at your own risk", each time we recommend one. Otherwise the Moderator would be forced to pull this privilege, so please add the disclaimer. The warranty is still voided but if a firmware does help, we would like the Members to know.

Thank you for understanding.

God, grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway,
the good fortune to run into the ones I do and the eyesight to tell the
difference.

This is a handy site here...  I've learned quite a bit about different types of blank media, and user reviews too.

Thanks Tommyo. the site looks very interesting. I deleted filters as suggested by Osprey. No change. Drives will not recognize blank discs.

Well,
I uninstalled all of my CD/DVD (Roxio, Sonic, Nero) programs, uninstalled the CD Drive and installed Roxio DVD Burner 3.5. Cleaned up the Registry and now the drives recognize blank CDs, but still not DVDs.
Does anyone have any more ideas?

Here's a little trick you can try. Get DVD Identifier and see if the program is able to read your blank discs.

That DVD Identifier is awesome; I've used that for a couple years now. It can tell you (who) really manufactured the media. So many times I've seen my favorite Maxell's with the "made in Taiwan; made in Mexico; or made in Panama".  I avoid those at all cost... :smileysurprised:

I have superb burn results with just about every media manufactured in Japan.... that is all I will purchase now.  I actually don't quite understand it, but I've read on numerous forums that it is something called AZO dye. I don't know what it is, but it sure gives me good results, lol.. I also have pretty good testing results when I test the quality of my burns with the Plextools software that came bundled up with both of my Plextor 716-A burners (I have two of 'em..).

Before I learned about the quality of the Japanese media, like many other folks I purchased the cheapest brands I could find...  no point in listing them here..  But of course, I had poor burn results with the bargain stuff...   Some disks not even being recognized when inserting them...

Hope this info might assist someone.. If you have poor results you might want to try a better media. I'll be darned; it surely does make a big difference.
