Please provide the model of your DVD drive. It would really be helpful if you explain exactly what discs you're talking about. Just blank media? What brand/speed/format?
dude sometimes cd or dvd has region codes that is one reason why you cannot play it. Another is when the cd already has scratches the cd rom wont read it, so try to check it first
to check the region code of your of the cd or dvd rom right click on the cd rom icon in my computer, then you will see a tab region you will see it there also here is the region code for a particular place
Normally I do not intervene on a thread another Member is working, this is considered rude in Dell`s forum, however John~Osprey is off-line and going out of town today. So I will drop a note until his return; John asked the question about you referencing Region Code for a CD, not DVD`s, the Region Codes for DVD`s is well noted. We do not recall CD`s having Region Codes, your link does not support that statement, only DVD media.
Best Regards

Thanks, but I already did that and it didn't work. I really don't know what the problem is, but I read the other day about DVD's speed and I wonder if that can be the problem. I'll keep trying.
John~Osprey is going to the Virginia Tech game tomorrow (I could not get tickets ), so I will drop a note until his return. He, Mike and I work together on this board and are good friends. OK, from your Tag, you have the dreaded GWA-4164B drive. There have been a number of problems with this drive. This is the standard reply Dell has asked us to run, which covers the drivers, controller, filters, diagnostic and firmware. If you have already run these, and still under warranty, please waste not more time with me and contact Dell directly. Dell-Elsbeth has the steps listed under the FAQ at the top of this page. Follow the steps for "Standard Trouble Shooting steps for CD/DVD drives"

So, if these updates don't work and the warranty is up, then we're just out of luck? I wonder why Dell hasn't chosen to fix this problem instead of making hundreds of its customers mad. I will never buy or recommend Dell again. Sad, because, this is the only problem I've ever had with my Dell. But poor customer service and the refusal to even try to rectify the situation has cost them much more $ than if they would have just replaced all the defective drives. I'm sure they even have a contract with the manufacturer of the drive so Dell could even recoup loses from them. I'd bet they are even still selling this drive even though they've recieved hundreds of complaints with the SAME issue.
To my knowledge Dell is dealing wih the drive on a case bye-case issue. Your best bet would be to contact Dell and plead your case. Tell them you have the problem with the drive from the begining. Whether they will replace the drive or not I have no idea, your call my friend.
