Can't change screen resolution

OK

I reformated XP, installed my drivers and cant change the resolution (it is stuck on 640 x 480).
I have tried updating the driver for the montior but I cant click on monitor properties (display - settings-advanced - monitor) so I cant install it and I cant openthe driver details button (display-settings-advanced-adapter-properties-driver).

I have tried the dell disk for both system drivers and montiors numerous times and been on the website.

In the device manager in other devices the multimedia audio controller, PCI modem, video controller (VGA compatible) all have the yellow exclamation mark next to it.

I dont know where to go from here -  everytime I log onto windows it asks me to click on the balloon to adjust the display setting so it makes me think it is hardware related.

Any help would be appreciated - we are all getting terrible eye strain trying to use a computer that has super enlarged graphics!!!!!!
