Inspiron 6400/E1505 - Optical Drive not reading discs anymore...

Question

Hi all, My system is T7200@2GHZ, 2GB RAM, ATI Mobility x1400, Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit. The optical drive is Sony DVD+-RW and at some point it stopped working. I figured - reading several forums - it's because of Daemon tools and/or Nero, took them out but still nothing. I tried a firmware update - UDS2WIN.exe from Dell, it told me the same firmware is already on but I flashed it anyway. No change... Then I think I made a mistake - I flashed another firmware which I think it's a wrong one Sony.Q58A.UYS2-4.stock.exe. The drive is now seen in BIOS as CD-ROM. It doesn't let me flash the initial UDS2WIN.exe... A little desperate now... Could anyone point me in some direction? I would appreciate any advice... Many thanks!

If you have 'flashed' a wrong firmware and are unable to flash thecorrect one, the drive may be a loss.  Consider replacing it. Message Edited by Skybird on 02-06-2008 06:41 AM

Skybird, Allan, thanks for your time... meanwhile I "managed" to flash another firmware but somehow it got corrupted, I had an error message, whatever...
BIOS did not see the drive anymore, saying it's not properly connected... took it out, bought a new one which works just fine.
