Hi Stephen,

This sounds like the issue we have seen many times with the Upper & Lower Filters.
Please click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 100, article 31 for the Microsoft article associated with Windows XP.

Best Regards!

I read your advice and tried guided help, which didn't work on my PC.

How big is the risk by editing/deleting parts of the registry as described in the documentation? Is there another way to resolve the problem since I do not have any software on CD as it was all integrated in the Dell-Package...

Thanks for your help!

Hi Stephen,

The method #2 has been used bye literatly hundreds of Members here, most do not have to reinstall their burning software but I will not mislead you and say there is a possiblity of having to reinstall your burning software.

We can trouble shoot this a little more before trying method #2 if you feel comfortable working inside your PC.

If so, go back to Device Manager, select one of the drives click Uninstall, next select the other drive, click Uninstall, then shutdown.
Open the case and reseat (unplug/replug) the IDE cable going from the motherboard to the back of each drive. Close the case and turn the system on, did this help?

If it did not, either try method #2 or Clear the NVRAM; for the steps, same CD/RW link, Section 11, article 2. Look at the lists provided bye Dell-ChrisM, find your system and run Chris instructions. After Clearing the NVRAM, if the drives do not come back, enter your BIOS/System Setup and verify that the IDE channel is set to auto and that both drives ae turned on.

Did any of the above help?
If we are batting a big fat zero, uninstall each drive from Device Manager as we did previously, then disconnect the drive setting on the "Middle" IDE connection and turn your system back on, does this drive work?
Test the "Middle" drive using the "End" connection of the IDE cable, leaving the Top drive off, does it work?

Best Regards!

Hi Predator

I took up the risk and deleted the two entries in the registry, restarted the computer and - what surprise - the drives are back again..!

Thanks for your support - gorgeous when it works so easy!
