well.. if you still have warranty call dell support.  if not.. buy from dell website.

Curiosity makes me ask ..... does the drive shows in the Device Manager?

The device manager says the drive may be corrupt or missing (code 39) when I try to update or re-install with Hardware Update Wizard.. When I run msinfo32 and select CD ROM under components, the dialog box which should have all the info on the driver is blank.  I suspect the driver is missing.

Looks like this did the trick.  I have my CDRW/DVD back.  Thanks for the help.

Sorry for providing wrong advice.  I will keep the upperfilters and lowerfilters trick filed away for the future.  Glad you got everything working fine again.  Good luck.
