Computer does not recognise CD/DVD.

Question

My Inspiron 8600 does not recognise the CD/DVD ROM drive when I turn the computer on.  I have tried removing and replacing the CD/DVD drive, re-booting, and restoring to an earlier date, but nothing seems to help.  Any help would be appreciated.

It sounds from your description of the symptoms that the drive is dead and needs to be replaced.

well.. if you still have warranty call dell support.  if not.. buy from dell website.

Curiosity makes me ask ..... does the drive shows in the Device Manager?

The device manager says the drive may be corrupt or missing (code 39) when I try to update or re-install with Hardware Update Wizard.. When I run msinfo32 and select CD ROM under components, the dialog box which should have all the info on the driver is blank.  I suspect the driver is missing.
