At the top of this forum there are some steps posted on how to run the diags on your hardware, I would suggest doing that. It sounds to me like you have a bad burner but you will have to run those diags when you contact support, so doing that before calling will help speed your service call time.
I have the same computer and i was trying to burn a cd with pics, videos and it seemed liked it was taking forever and it did. at least a half hour to burn about 20 pics and about 7 short video clips (1 minute or less, some only about 10 seconds). the whole time i could hear the cd keep speeding up faster and slowing down, up and down up and down? is this normal?
I just got off tech support with dell and they told me they have been having problems with certain cd's mainly memorex and maxell. I was using a maxell disc and they told me that may be the problem. anyone else heard of this? i may have to try another brand of cd, but on the laptop i h ad before this one all I used was memeorex and had no problems, maybe it's cause I have vista now?
Vista is certainly a problem sometimes, go read the post I gave above and also check out the FAQ at the top of this forum there is a lot of information to wade thru but you will gain a better understanding perhaps of what it going on.
Do you have SP1 applied yet to your Vista installation?
You may not have it, it will not be offered if they have not solved some of the known problems which I understand can effect certain models of Dell computers. I have no inside info on that, only what I read secondhand.
Check My Computer Properties, it will tell you if you have SP1
If you were a bother I would simply ignore you :smileyhappy:
Your questions are valid and on topic and I wish I had a solution for you but at the moment I'm not coming up with much
Cheers, Dave

It might pay you to force an update, open the tools menu on Internet Explorer and go to Windows Update, see what they offer. I've had good success with this sofar, but I understand there are some problems with certain systems. Bottom line, you can reverse the process and it it goes OK, you probably will be better off.

Some steps to try:
1. Can you read or play any CD?
2. Can the CD's you made be read on any other system?
3. Can you use your blank CD on another system with success?
Lots of variables! Answers to the above may point you to a solution.

It sounds like the drive has switched from DMA to PIO, go read this and try the steps for switching it back to DMA:

I do not have any more suggestions other than to try another brand blank. Surf a little and see if you can find any recommendation on brands.
Good luck, Dave
