You'll have to wait for the CD to arrive, or borrow one from another Dell owner.  Microsoft doesn't permit Windows to be downloaded (legally that is).

Meanwhile, you might consider running the extended hard drive diagnostics to rule out a hard drive failure.

Power on, press F12 and boot to the Dell diagnostic partition.

Thanks for the reply,

I do not know of anyone else who has the cd near me.  I live in Gardena California.

Anyways I did run the F12 feature and it tells me there is a error and that is when I went to put the cd for the drivers, I installed something and that is when it gave me the DLLs Error message from a previous post I had posted. So rightnow I am at a standstill on what to do, I can not do nothing at this point.  It will not even take the copy cd that I was given to restore the computer. :(

What is the exact error reported by the Dell diagnostics?

The exact error message is Start DST Short Test,

Test Result: Fail

Error Code: 1000-0146

Msg: Unit 0:DST log contains previous error

After I finish running the test

it tells me on a grey box that NO diagmostic utility partition found.  To run diagnostics insert your dell drivers and utilities cd and click ok.

I did that and it took me back to the same error message to report the error message

load needed DLLs for kernel,

contact your support person to report this problem.

So again I am stuck :(.

OMG!!!  Your kidding me right?  this is so crazy, I have to wait 10-15 days for the cds, waiting for the transfer title to go through, I never did it, then to know my harddrive is failing me, Lord help me.  Is it worth restoring and fixing???  Should I just go get another computer?  This is just insanely crazy, I m in my last year of college, I go to school on line, and I am just so frustrated and upset.  I am using my hubby old toshiba satellite, its slow but it works.  Please advise.

A hard drive costs about $50-75;  your call.

Hi Ckanehai001,

While you're waiting for a new hard drive there's a diagnostic that may be able to get you up and running again in hopes of doing two things (1) correct the problem proving the drive is good, or (2) allowing enough corrections to be made so that you could (more) reliably transfer your data from the drive.

The software "Drive Fitness Test" performs this task is made from Hitachi, but will run on any drive.  The link takes you to a place to either create a floppy (easiest) or create a cd (may need burning software).

When you boot to the application it will search for all drives.  You can then select your drive and run the "Advanced Test".  This test will scan your full surface.  When it runs into any "uncorrectable" read errors it will prompt you to correct the error by two means (1) erase the entire disk to force reallocations (2) correct ONLY those sectors that need to be.

Once completed your drive will hopefully be ready to go or ready to start retrieving data from.
