Yes, I see "UNKNOWN" in BIOS, and in Device manager. But I am not exactly sure what device "UNKNOWN" is referring to so I've hesitated to mess with it.
Some slim drives are set to csel (cable select) and so the master/slave designation is provided by the cable. You've already tried two cables with this drive, so it's tough to say where the problem is. It's possible this drive is configured as master or slave, which would explain the "unknown" setting in the BIOS.
Siince the CD-244e is not a model used in Dell machines, the solution may be to purchase a slim drive that came out of a Dell.

No cd drive is shown in Device manager.
