The 'tool tip' indicates the (empty) CD/DVD drive (with its complete hardware name) when I hover the mouse over it. There are no flash drives or other removeable hardware attached.
Why is it important that you remove that icon? Perhaps it is something to do with the hot swappable drives you might have installed. I have 3 Dell laptops running Windows XP Pro but I don't see the icon.
First of all, that icon wasn't there before reinstalling XP. Second, I see two potential problems. Consider a USB flash drive being used and, when clicking on the tray icon to remove the drive, the wrong item is stopped. First, the flash drive is not properly disconnected prior to removal. Second, the possibility that there would actually be a disconnect somewhere in the software for the CD/DVD and that it might not function as expected when a disc is inserted thereafter.
I just got a C800 yesterday. And I do see that icon. It controls any flash drives that I may insert or a floppy disk drive swappable module. I just right-click on it and then scroll to select the flash drive to safely remove it. As I wrote in the other post, your CD/DVD drive must be hot-swappable just as the floppy drive is on my C800. You would use this icon only if you plan on removing the entire drive bay to replace with maybe a 2nd hard drive or something while the computer is on. If you want to eject a CD or DVD, you use the Eject button.
Well, the drive MAY be hot-swappable. I then would wonder why the icon wasn't there before. Same operating system, service pack and all, and presumably the same driver. Perhaps not. If it (the icon) is supposed to be there then, I'll leave it at that and just advise the user to be careful about what she selects for removal.
