Try setting the IDE HD's jumpers to 'Master'.

Have you checked that the SATA port for the hard drive is 'Enabled' [on]?

Enter Setup/Advanced Tab/Integrated Peripherals/ Highlight Serial-ATA Configuration/Select the SATA Controller.

The IDE to SATA adaptors, are considered to be very unreliable, an easier and better method, is to use a USB 2.0 powered external IDE enclosure.

Thanks Bev,

The info that I was missing was that an IDE drive should be set to 'Master' to work with the sata controller.

A little counter intuitive but there you go, it's a bonus that IDE drives can be used at all.

The SATA ports automatically came alive when something (correctly set up) was connected to them (no need to modify Bios settings).

The IDE to SATA adaptor worked without a problem after discovering what the problem was.

I have a number of IDE to USB enclosures (1 is connected to a PS3) so I can move multimedia files around without relying on Windows Media Centre configured as a media server (which works fitfully at best). I just thought that using the IDE to SATA was a little neater on my desktop and usefully utilized a free space under the bonnet.

Again, many thanks.
